Master of Arts in Linguistics

The MA Linguistics program equips students with advanced contemporary linguistic theories and methodologies that will aid them in their teaching, research, and translation.

Interested applicants to the MA Linguistics program are required to have an average grade of 2.5 or higher in her/his bachelor’s degree program. An applicant may also be interviewed by the Graduate Program Committee of the Department. If a student’s bachelor’s degree is not Linguistics, she/he is required to take Linggwistiks 201 (Science of Linguistics) and must obtain a grade of 1.5 or higher in order to continue the program. Application in the MA Linguistics program is coursed through the Office of the Graduate Program of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (Palma Hall Room 111). Deadline for application is May 15. Admission to the program is during the 1st Semester only.

MA Linguistics Program Curriculum

Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics

The PhD Linguistics program focuses on Philippine linguistics to promote research on Philippine languages to address language-related issues and needs of the Philippines.

Interested applicants to the PhD Linguistics program are required to have an average grade of 1.75 or higher in his/her master’s degree program. An applicant may also be interviewed by the Graduate Program Committee of the Department. Application in the PhD Linguistics program is coursed through the Office of the Graduate Program of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (Palma Hall Room 111). Deadline for application is on May 15th. Admission to the program is during the 1st Semester only.

PhD Linguistics Program Curriculum

Submit the following admission requirements to the Office of the Graduate Program

  • Application letter addressed to

The Dean
          College of Social Sciences and Philosophy
          University of the Philippines
          Diliman, Quezon City

  • Duly accomplished Application Form, in duplicate copy with four (4) 2″ x 2″ photos.
  • Official Transcript of Records (TOR) of undergraduate work (and graduate work, if any), one original copyone certified true copy of the original, and one photocopy.
  • One (1) copy of Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Birth Certificate (PSA authenticated), one (1) original copy and two (2) photocopies of the the original; Marriage Certificate (for married woman applicant), one (1) original copy and two (2) photocopies of the the original.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation (Recommendation Form) from former professors and/or employees with their evaluation of the applicant’s potential for graduate work.
  •  A non-refundable application fee of:
        1. Php 100.00 for Filipino citizens
        2. US $25 for non-resident aliens

    The application fee should be paid at the Cashier’s Office, Philippine National Bank, UP Campus. Foreign applicants sending their applications from abroad should enclose an International Postal Money Order for US $25 (or equivalent amount in other currency) payable to: University of the Philippines.

  • One to two-page description of research plan (for MA applicants) or research proposal (for doctoral applicants only).
  • For applicants whose native language is not English and/or who come from an Institution where the medium of instruction is not English: Certification of English language proficiency with TOEFL score of: Internet based – 61 or better; Computer based – 173 or better and for Paper based – 500 or better
  • Other requirements that may be specified by the department/institute. Inquire from the department/institute concerned.
  • Applications mailed from outside the Philippines should be sent to the:
